On the 12 April 1961, Vostok 1 lifted off from the Soviet Cosmodrome in Baikonur with cosmonaut Major Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin on board. Gagarin was the first human being to leave the Earth’s atmosphere, and although his flight was to last only 1 hour 48 minutes, circling the Earth just once, it provoked important political, social, cultural and technical changes, and changed humanity’s perspective of its place on Earth forever.

The RAeS "Yuri Gagarin’s Legacy – 50 Years On" conference on 16th March is now only one week away.

Securing the vision for the next half century

12 April 1961, Vostok 1

See http://www.aerosocietychannel.com/events/?p=3373 for general information.

We are also pleased to announced that in addition to talks by HRH Prince Michael of Kent, the new Russian Ambassador His Excellency Alexander Yakovenko, Deputy Head of Roscosmos Vitaly Davidov, CEO of STFC Prof Keith Mason, Cosmonaut Oleg Kotov and other renowned speakers there will be a special showing of Chris Riley's new film "First Orbit" at 1800.

First Orbit – an industry preview screening of the new film 6.00pm

By matching the orbital path of the Space Station, as closely as possible, to that of Gagarin's Vostok 1 spaceship and filming the same vistas of the Earth through the cupola window, astronaut Paolo Nespoli and documentary film maker Christopher Riley, (In the Shadow of the Moon) has captured a new digital high definition view of the Earth from orbit, half a century after Gagarin first witnessed it.

Weaving these new views together with historic on board recordings of Gagarin, released for the first time, and an original score by composer Philip Sheppard, the film makers have created a spellbinding film which will premiere around the world on the 12th April.

Join the film’s producer Chris Riley for an industry preview of First Orbit at 6.00pm in the main lecture theatre. Visit www.firstorbit.org for more information.
